Questions of exploration:

What is soil? - take a soil hike around your back yard. Collect a variety of soil samples and label them. Collect enough soil for use in small group observations back in your house. You may also wish to include a store-bought bag of potting soil and/or sand as well.

Have students list what the see, smell and feel...then consolidate together with what soil is and how it is different than dirt. Ask students why they think soil is important to human beings.
