1. What is soil? Soil is a combination of minerals, organic matter and gases that support the growth of plants
2. What is dirt? Dirt is soil that is out of place and can no longer support life
3. Why is soil important? - grow plants (oxygen/food supply), recycle nutrients, absorb/ filter water, construction
Diagnostic discussion with students to see what they already know and develop an awareness of the content of the unit. Support with read aloud or video about soils. Remind them that they are already dirt detectives for the remainder of Mrs. H science unit.
